What Kinds Of Products Are Best For Direct Selling?

May 13, 2020 By admin Leave a Comment

Not every type of product is ideal for the direct selling channel.  Some are clearly better than others.

If you’re going to introduce a new product, let it be a good one for direct selling.

Questions To Answer

In this video, I will ask you a series of questions about your products.  Watch to find out if your products have what it takes to sell successfully in a direct selling, party plan, or social selling company.

About Product Development

Did you know that product development is a 12-step process?  The steps include:

  1. Generating ideas
  2. Filtering ideas
  3. Developing a product concept
  4. Researching the market
  5. Creating a prototype
  6. Testing the prototype
  7. Refining the design
  8. Producing the initial run
  9. Testing the product for efficacy and customer acceptance
  10. Adjusting the design as needed
  11. Producing the second run
  12. Creating product descriptions and training materials

That’s 12 steps to do before your new product is ready to be sold at large!

About Digital Products

Direct selling is a wonderful business model.  Through it, independent representatives can sell both tangible and digital products.

Digital products are provided online by software that tracks usage.  When a company sells digital products, it is very easy for regulators to determine product usage statistics because the company has the usage data.  The data makes it very easy to determine whether a digital product is a token product.

If you are selling or thinking about selling digital products and you wish to operate safely in a world of regulators, be sure to sell products that are sufficiently used.  Otherwise, your life as a direct selling company will be short, while your life in prison may be long.

Digital products are good because the cost to the company of each unit may be very small, which is great for the bottom line.

Did you know that if your company provides digital products, your company is more visible in the eyes of regulators?

Token Products

Regulators care about many things, one of which is product usage.  They don’t want direct selling companies to sell products that aren’t used.  We call these “token” products because what they are doesn’t matter.

Companies that sell token products focus their promotional efforts almost completely on the income opportunity.  Very little is said about the product.  Very few sales are made to customers who are not participants in the income opportunity.

The importance of selling to customers is absent from the business model of direct selling companies that sell token products because almost no one would buy these products if it were not for the income opportunity.

Product Quality

Today, customers expect to buy products with great reviews.  They don’t want to buy lemons.

How will they know if your products are good?  Sip on that thought for a minute, then keep reading.

Begin by setting the bar high for the products or services your company will sell.  Don’t sell mediocrity.  Aim to sell items that will have raving fans (raving in a good way).

Encourage all of your customers and your representatives to submit product reviews that your software will make available – just like Amazon does – to customers during the ordering process.

Go even further.  While customers and representatives are placing their orders, your MLM software could make upsell suggestions based on the purchase history of similar customers.

Reviews

Here are some of the comments people have shared with us about our book:

  • This guide was the only place where I could find an A–Z assessment of how to start up a direct sales business. The guide was concise and thoughtful, and the one hour of consulting was the most effective hour I spent starting this business.
  • I love the worksheets! You can write everything down. There is so much in here that I hadn’t considered.
  • You were right there coaching and encouraging me all the way through.
  • The book has opened my eyes to a lot of things that are going to need to be done to do this correctly.
  • The major task list and the timeline alone were worth the price of the book.
  • The Direct Selling Guide was a very useful tool in getting fast answers to the many questions I had.
  • I liked the scope of the book, it made sense. It showed me from a company standpoint things I just did not know, and it reinforced in a better way things that I did know. I believe it is worth every cent and more.
  • The points you made about the thought process to set prices were very helpful.  The insight you gave me led me to package my products differently. I’m excited about my new packaging!
  • It was an eye-opener for both of us.
  • It explained things that I had never even considered.
  • The StartUp Guide was exactly what I needed.
  • This is an incredible source of valuable information for both startups and existing companies.
